Default Cheap server for home backup?

I want to have another PC on my home LAN to use as server to run the
External 250 GB HD backup I used to backup 4 PCs.
I have 4 PCs on my LAN and when they backup over LAN it bogs down the PC I
use, this is the same PC that interfaces (USB 2.0) to the External HD.

What is the cheapest way to get a server (or is there a simple device that
will act like a server) to interface from the ethernet (100 baseT) LAN to my
External USB HD backup?

I have a spare old laptop that would work, but I need USB 2.0 for the HD and
it doesnt have that.

Any thoughts or tips or suggestions are appreciated!

Thanks!

I haven't seen any reviews myself. In fact jtsnow's statement is the first
thing good or bad I've seen written about it.

I just new that I'd seen it in the stores and went to the web site to get a
link. I have NO experience with this device or any other like it.

do a goole search.....or take a look at amazon or CNET..on CNET especially
after my 100 reviews about 50% are thumbs down..thats a horrendous ratio

I would recommend simply using an existing PC that supports, USB 2.0
and reconfigure the box using something like Clark Connect or Knoppix,
a Linux distribution and you'll notice significant speed improvement.
You can set the Linux system up with Samba and it will act as a print
server if you wish as well, a firewall, and many other things.

I'm not sure what you're comfort level is with technology and how much
of a do-it-yourselfer you are went it comes to your home setup. I would
think having 4 PCs on your home network, that you would happy with one
of the easy to setup Linux distributions.
