I want to install Apache to be run locally on my own system. What do I put
for domain name and server name when installing ?

server name: localhost should do for your purpose.
domain name: doesn't matter much in your case. Try
my.domain.invalid and look where it is used in
<apacheinstalldir>/conf/httpd.conf

You can use virtualhosts even on localhost.
