"No web site configured at this address" error?

I've managed to successfully compile and run Apache 2.0.49
(as a service) on my Windows 200 Professional SP2
,machine, although the server delivers a "404 Object Not
Found" error code for pretty much all HTTP requests, along
with a "No web site configured at this address" message ...

Could someone with expertise in this area tell me the cause of
this error, whereabouts in the code it originates,
and the best way to avoid it
