I hope everyone realizes that downloading and installing a patch like
this from a newsgroup is like playing Russian roulette. Download all
your Windows patches directly from Microsoft's Windows Update page.

this is the latest version of security update, the
"November 2003, Cumulative Patch" update which fixes
all known security vulnerabilities affecting
MS Internet Explorer, MS Outlook and MS Outlook Express
as well as three new vulnerabilities.
Install now to maintain the security of your computer
from these vulnerabilities, the most serious of which could
allow an malicious user to run executable on your computer.
This update includes the functionality of all previously released patches.

By the way, anyone found an effective way to get rid of these? I've
got a rule on the server to place them in a separate folder, but I
still have to delete them manually. The numbers tend to get less and
less (100 per day now vs a peak of 1000 per day about a month ago), but
they are way too annoying :P

No, it isn't like Russian roulette - in Russian roulette, you actually have
a chance of survival. M$ does not EVER post patches to newsgroups, or
email them either - period. This is the infamous "Swen" virus that we've
all heard about.

Actually, if you're playing "classic" Russin Roulette, with a single bullet
and 5 empty chambers and spinning the chamber between shots, your chances
are pretty good as the chamber is more likely to stop spining before the
bullet reaches the top position. Of course this changes if you hold the
revolver upside down while spinning the chamber or if you don't spin
between shots.

IMHO, your particular chance of survival is a lot better if you remove MS
products from your PC altogether. There are plenty of alternatives, just
look for them. If you insist on spending some money, you could do worse
than checking out http://www.sun.com/2003-1104/feature...ciateId=NEWS68

But whatever you do, please etop posting this kind of thing to
comp.lang.apl - this is way, way off topic.

Actually shoting yourself(with all 6 bullets) gives more changes for
survival(because bullet may not shot). If you're downloaded path and
installing it,it will run for sure.

I'm happy seeng that one of my emails auto-filters that F#$%&# out,
but my other e-mail are totally filled up in 30 minutes.
There are also other bad thing:
"From" in virus message may point to you,and you're receiving that
annoying "you have the virus".Or more idiotic,"kgkd@yahoo.com has
posted you the virus" !

I have idea:
Any message have "path" in header, shows what servers it pass. And ip of
first server.Swen works like "mail server"(not like client),sending
message directly as "routed",can put everything into from field, but
swen can't put wrong IP because swen need to estabilish connection
with normal mail server. So,WHOIS to that IP,and mail to owner contact
e-mail .
something like "Automatic spam report:IP nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn sending swen"
(then swen will mimic sending with big path, then we need something
new,etc...)
