There are dozens of ways you could do this. If you provide details on how,
exactly, you want the process to go - someone can give you a better answer.

The process goes something like this:-

A casual visitor enters the site and reads brief descriptions
(abstracts) of document. The visitor decides he would like to read -
and is willing to pay a small fee for - a particular document. He hits
a button and is requested for his credit card details. He enters his
card no. expiry date & whatever else and is then given a link to
download the required document. The small fee (less approproate
commission) is then paid to my bank account.

As I am no security/finance expert I would prefer (for a fee) to hand
payment processing to a 3rd party. My role would be to provide the
content & set up the front end.

cheers

Isn't authorize.net one of the more expensive gateways ?

Original poster...

Could well be. I've never dealt with them. But I'll bet they're cheaper
than anything that doesn't involve having your own merchant account.

That is an important question. Even PayPal has real-time processing, if
you're willing to pay their rates.

Really can't say. Could be quite small or could be huge.

Initially I'd like to start with a payment service that takes a
percentage of revenues rather than charging a flat fee as I don't want
to pay out more than I receive.

cheers
