Default [squid-users] --enable-icmp question

can someone tell me the point of the --enable-icmp configure option?
is it for client use or just for squid to find out of the server is up and
running or not?

i've tried looking at the manual at squid.visolve.com, but the pages keep
reloading in mozilla so i can't read anything!

thank you,

chris
