Unfortunately I don't have an answer for you. But I do want to say that
I'm in your same boat. I spent nearly the exact same hours on the exact same days trying to come up with the exact same setup you are trying, and experienced the exact same results. It does appear to be running, I've made sure the database is getting queries just fine, etc But when I scan my network, it keeps on ticking like there isn't a thing wrong. I'm running on Fedora Core 2. Everything seems to be setup just as it should be, but still, no alerts. I join in your frustration.
