The IpAddress type is actually defined specially as a distinct
type within the SNMP specs. So such an index shouldn't be
encoded as an OCTET STRING at all.

Which table are you querying?
Note that many such tables actually use the InetAddress
type (Textual Convention), which *is* a variable-length string.



It's impossible to comment properly as to whether the
behaviour you are seeing is correct or not. We need to
know the *EXACT* OIDs that you are working with.
Vague descriptions about "a table" aren't much use!
