I did exactly what you told me above, still it produces the same error.
The Linux distribution used on that machine is Slackware 7.1

I tried it again (unpack, configure) on a Suse 9.0 machine and
everything works fine.

5.3.0.1 and earlier versions works fine on both distributions.
