With that search path, you don't actually need the option
'-c /usr/local/etc/snmp/snmpd.conf'

But it shouldn't do any real harm.

If that's all the config that the agent is finding, then it should work.

Boggle! Definitely not what I expected.
That looks exactly like the behaviour of the common default
configuration of many pre-installed distributions. But your
"-Dread_config" output shows no sign of this whatsoever.

Not really.
About the only thing left is to check whether you're actually
querying the agent that you think you are.

What happens if you kill the -Dread_config version of snmpd,
then retry the snmpwalk command? I'd expect it to timeout
without displaying anything. If it comes back with the same
system group output, then there's another agent running on
the box.

Otherwise, I'm stumped!
