i also got this error on my IRIX systems. Concerning this issue, i
posted a message last year with a trace file attached. Maybe this helps
for further investigations (i have attached this file again).
BTW: creating an empty file with the appropriate file name doesn't help.

unfortunately i can not give you online-access to one of my IRIX boxes
and since i'm not a developer i am likely not able to figure this out.
But i could do some tests.
