Because no-one has written the necessary code.
The project has generally had relatively few perl-competent developers
compared to C programmers.

Yes - it would definitely be sensible for the perl routine to handle
this situation. If you haven't already done so, it would probably
be sensible to log this as a bug in the SF tracker system.
(We *do* respond to items there - if not always as promptly as
we would like).
