I've just checked the latest 5.3 tarball, and it doesn't seem to
have this problem. I don't think anything has changed recently,
but it's worth trying with 5.3.rc1

The other question is how are you unpacking the tarball?
I seem to remember reports of certain archive processing
tools having problems with unpacking these tarballs correctly
(though I can't remember the details).
It might be worth trying with two or three different
applications, if you can get hold of them.
