HELLO !!!
I have read in rfc 1157: "Communication among protocol entities is accomplished by the exchange of messages, each of which is entirely and independently represented within a single UDP datagram using the basic encoding rules of ASN.1. A message consists of a version identifier, an SNMP community name, and a protocol data unit (PDU)." and "An implementation of this protocol need not accept messages whose length exceeds 484 octets. However, it is recommended that implementations support larger datagrams whenever feasible." When I asked <<I have read in the book "SNMP, SNMPv2, SNMPv3 and RMON 1 and 2" that the theoretical maximum size of a OCTECT STRING is 64 KB. I need to know if this limit is kept by net-snmp or if it imposes another one. Another question about this matter, would be any problem is transmit a such a BIG piece of information? What maximum size do you advise me?>> Robert Story answered me "It is the size limit of a UDP packet." and "Very possibly, depending on the networks the packet has to traverse. 1492 should be a safe size that will avoid fragmentation on most networks." I have defined all my display strings with a maximum length of 1492 bytes and it works ok. Now, after reading rfc 1157 I am very confused because I wonder how could a data of 1492 bytes fit in a message of 484 bytes. Probably it is a very silly question. if so, please don`t take offence with me and answer in spite of this. Another question: Soon I will have to expoud my thesis to became a doctor, I am sure the board will answer me reason of the election of this maximum size of 1492 for my display strings. could you give me a good answer for this quiestion? Thank a lot for your answer and you attention. gemma ------------------------------------------------------- This SF.net email is sponsored by: Splunk Inc. Do you grep through log files for problems?
