If your system is set up for proper locale support then in theory I thought it should work (but I haven't double checked the code). The '.'s are supposed to only be printed if isprint() returns that it isn't printable, which shouldn't be the case if your locale is set properly. Hmm... though double-bytes could be problematic.... grumble.
