Re: No /etc/snmp in el4

OK - My apologies.
I've now checked the binaries, and it appears that we *do*
install into /usr/share et al (rather than /usr/local).

Hmmm...
I've just check my installed version of this script (fc2,
but it ought to have been built from the same configuration)
and this defaults to "/usr/share/snmp"

I'm not quite sure why your script is telling you to use
/usr/local/share.

I'd actually expect this to be either /usr/local/share/snmp or
(given the binaries you're using) /usr/share/snmp

Try starting the agent using:

snmpd -f -Le -Dread_config

That will:
a) let you see any error messages
b) report *exactly* where the agent is looking for the config files.

Hmmm...
Yes - you are quite correct.
That initialisation script is making some unwarrented assumptions.
Unfortunately, most of the developers are probably working with
the agents directly (since I typically have two or three on the
go at once, and need to switch between them). So we won't tend
to use this initialisation script :-(

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.
We're in the process of releasing the next version, so I'll
try to make sure that this is fixed for that binary release.

Umm...??
I've just looked at the contents of the 5.2.1.2-1.fc2 RPM, and that
*doesn't* seem to include an 'snmpd.conf' file. Are you sure you're
not comparing our packages with (e.g.) a RedHat supplied version?
