I'm more inclined to vote in favor of it if you could list all the
platforms that such a feature is tested on, including the oldest ones
you could find that support shared libraries.

Even if you could convince me it should be left on by default, I'm
still not entirely sure this should be put in until the next release.
Changing how we call linkers this late into a release just doesn't
give me warm fuzzies when I sleep at night. It has nothing to do with
whether or not I think it should be done, it has to do with whether I
think it should be done now.

Do I think it would be more convenient than having people call
net-snmp-config --libs to link their apps against our libraries? yes.

Do I think it'll work on every platform? that's where I come up "maybe".
