Unfortunately configure seems to use hard-coded calls to 'sed' in
AC_OUTPUT, so I don't see a way to have configure use one of the [g]sed
alternatives that may be available on the system in question.

I still hope someone can come up with a better fix, but if we don't, I'd
not object against Dave's proposal.
