Two possibilities spring to mind.

Either your program is trying to request a subtly different OID
from the 'snmpget' command. Or it's using a different community
string, which doesn't have access to this object.

Try running the agent with some debugging turned on,
and see why it rejects the request.

Try dumping the contents of the outgoing requests,
and comparing the two.
