See the mail archives for prior discussions on compressed files for a
reference to a patch that can be used for this (though I don't recommend
it, as it removes size checking from the transfer quick-check). Another
way to get backups compressed is to use the BackupPC application, which
speaks the rsync protocol and stores the backup data with all redundancy
removed and files compressed. See the resources web page for the link:

The final option is to use a compressed filesystem.
