Using rrdtool on in-memory data

I want to use rrdtool on an rrd db which is not stored in a file but
is available in memory. Of course I could write the data to a file and
use it, but I wanted to find out if there's way to pass the in-memory
data directly to rrdtool. I've searched around but can't seem to find
anything in this direction.
