Or perhaps I should say Ladies and Gentlemen
I am grateful for the help you have given me today and yesterday, but I have always been told that the only stupid question is the one you don’t ask. Please indulge me for a minute and continue reading. I started writing Assembler on punch cards in 1964 to mainframes, then FORTRAN on punch cards to main frames, next circa 1980 I started programming on my Sinclair ZX80 in BASIC and machine code. Circa 1984 I started programming on my first IBM PC BASIC As time went on Pascal, dBase, FoxPro, (yes they both had languages as well as database) clipper (the version was called summer of 86) and then when Windows and the internet came around Delphi. I have made a living as a contract programmer for the last 22 years. I taught myself every language I know I had to because I’m dyslexic and can not learn like “Normal Folks” While I was using Clipper I used to help out on lots of newsgroups and I never told anyone. “Your questions fall into the DUH!!! category.” “Your question(s) are pretty much an FAQ in the WYSIFA Forums.” “Before I tried to program anything in php, I read the manual.” “I know you are just learning and starting out, but this was rather basic.” “What a cleverly selected Subject:!” My questions are probably stupid – at least to all you “Experts” But you know what? Real quick this all will click in my dyslexic little mind and then we’ll see who’s the export Len Bell |

If you really did teach yourself all those languages, then you should be at least starting with this one by making an effort to discover the very basic steps, before asking for help. |

I don't need to get into a pissing contest with you. It is very obvious you
know nothing about dyslexia. I can't read paragraphs at a time my mind only grasps small bursts of written information and then I get confused. I teach myself by nibbling at this then that and sooner or later the entire language comes into focus. A function definition is ok but a chapter on a topic is beyond me. "If you really did teach yourself all those languages" What do I need to give you my resume? You know if my questions offend you why bother replying? Is it just that you can't feel big unless you make someone else feel small? I was not the one who called the questions DOH questions, I was just trying to explain why you weren't getting any good replies. You seem to have no problem reading the replies on this group, and being very abusive in your responses. I wish you luck in your enterprises, I think you will need it, because you haven't made any friends here. |

Where is it writen that I can't "Top Post"
Secondly I did get conciderable help Third - this is exactly the format I can read. Again you are showing your ignorance of dyslexia. Finally - I didn't realize you are the spokesman for the group Len Bell "Paul Lautman" <paul.lautman@btinternet.com> wrote in message news:69u7stF34jtttU1@mid.individual.net... > lenbell wrote: >> "Paul Lautman" <paul.lautman@btinternet.com> wrote in message >> news:69u57vF33ie2eU1@mid.individual.net... >>> lenbell wrote: >>>> Or perhaps I should say Ladies and Gentlemen >>>> >>>> I am grateful for the help you have given me today and yesterday, >>>> but I have always been told that the only stupid question is the >>>> one you don't ask. >>>> Please indulge me for a minute and continue reading. >>>> >>>> I started writing Assembler on punch cards in 1964 to mainframes, >>>> then FORTRAN on punch cards to main frames, next circa 1980 I >>>> started programming on my Sinclair ZX80 in BASIC and machine code. >>>> Circa 1984 I started programming on my first IBM PC >>>> BASIC >>>> >>>> As time went on Pascal, dBase, FoxPro, (yes they both had languages >>>> as well as database) clipper (the version was called summer of 86) >>>> and then when Windows and the internet came around Delphi. >>>> >>>> I have made a living as a contract programmer for the last 22 years. >>>> >>>> I taught myself every language I know I had to because I'm dyslexic >>>> and can not learn like "Normal Folks" >>>> >>>> While I was using Clipper I used to help out on lots of newsgroups >>>> and I never told anyone. >>>> "Your questions fall into the DUH!!! category." >>>> "Your question(s) are pretty much an FAQ in the WYSIFA Forums." >>>> "Before I tried to program anything in php, I read the manual." >>>> "I know you are just learning and starting out, but this was rather >>>> basic." You could do a search on google for "top post" and then you would find many articles about it. You can top post, you can also stick your head up your arse for all I care. |

I, too, have taught myself every language I know and I, too, first started (with Fortran) in 1964. I, too, have made my living for the past 26 years as a programmer. However, there the similarity ends. I have, at times, asked a question and gotten back the equivalent of the RTFM. You know what? They were right!!!! They were absolutely correct. I should have done a little more homework FIRST before asking those questions. I try to do that now every time every time I post a question (although I still fail sometimes). The people who help here are PROFESSIONALS and they are taking time away from their busy schedules earning money in order to generously help others who are professionals or trying to achieve that status. As Paul has stated, it is obvious that you didn't do any homework -- meaning learning the basics. Now, if you had said something on the order of "I am trying to teach myself PHP and I am confused on this ...........blah...... I looked on google doing a search with "foo bar", but didn't find anything and I looked on www.php.net and must not be searching it right. Can someone point me in the right direction?", then, I think, the attitude of the people here -- who have been VBRY helpful to me in the past -- would have been different. Rather, you came across as someone who just didn't bother to even try to learn the basics. I don't know if it was your post or someone else's. The post I am thinking of was where the OP asked what are those tags (<? and ?>). I laughed (and then gave what I thought was a helpful answer). My daughter, who is a web designer but knows essentially NO php (she knows how to include a file) is visiting and I showed her that post. She rolled on the floor laughing. As I said, I don't know whose post it was. (At least in that one the poster had TRIED to google for the answer). So, either do some homework first, develop a thicker skin or find another pursuit. |

> Where is it writen that I can't "Top Post" It is called "courtesy". Most people prefer to read replies immediately after the post or section of post. That way it makes the most sense to them. There is no Gestapo enforcing this. The only thing that happens to people who are adamant in being discourteous when asked nicely to please not top post is that their posts make their way to the bit-bucket. If that is where you want your questions to wind up then, by all means, top-post. > > Secondly I did get conciderable help I hope that even with the DUH that I have been able to help you. You have a handicap. Are you telling us that you cannot follow my comments in THIS reply because I in-lined responded? > > Finally - I didn't realize you are the spokesman for the group No one is the spokesman for the group. He is just saying what others are thinking. Once again, if I have helped you I am glad. If you were insulted by the "DUH" or the PHP101, then do your homework first next time before you post. |

But I also agree with Paul. You are using your dyslexia as an excuse and a crutch. If you can understand it in the newsgroup, you can understand much of it from the manual itself. Your arrogance and plain asinine behavior is not endearing you to anyone else here. And the fact you do have no problem reading and understanding the posts here. That they are in a "format you can understand" is an excuse. Go ahead and keep up your behavior. It won't be long before most everyone here plonks you and you get NO responses to any of your questions. Here's a suggestion. Hire someone to tutor you (no, I don't do tutoring). Then you can ask all of the stupid questions you want. But we're volunteers here - and I'm with Paul - I'm not here to answer questions you can easily look up in the manual. And don't try using your dyslexia as an excuse for your laziness again. It won't work because severely dyslexic people who can't understand the manual can't understand posts here, either. And don't top post. -- ================== Remove the "x" from my email address Jerry Stuckle JDS Computer Training Corp. jstucklex@attglobal.net ================== |

And by the way, someone being the only one to tell you something doesn't mean he's the only one thinking that way. It just means that other people that may second don't have anything interesting to add except a basic useless "+1" post. Regards, -- Guillaume |
