I need to create a website and I want to filter out filthy words or
swear words. To my surprise, it is difficult to find such a list from google. So if you have that list, can you please share with me so that I can keep my site clean. Thanks very much in advance. hexufeng@gmail.com |

Looking at it some more, even more hilarious is the fact 'b!tch', 'b17ch' & 'b1tch' are swear words, but 'bitch' isn't. Another plus: having 'balls' as a swear word might render any sports related website quite weird... I've long. long, long, very long, did I say long?, in ancient times, before man stood upright, and again very long ago given up on the whole concept of automated swear word filtering. Those who want to do it will find a way. If you allow user addition of texts and want a profanity filer, moderating it os IMHO the only real way to go. All those lists could possibly be used as a call for extra attention from the moderators, but that's about it. -- Rik Wasmus [SPAM] Now temporarily looking for some smaller PHP/MySQL projects/work to fund a self developed bigger project, mail me at rik at rwasmus.nl. Breast is one of the filtered words... since when is breast cancer a taboo subject? |

I will give a few examples from the list of bad words given: anal - a perfectly correct word when used in a medical context; ass - the name of an animal sometimes called donkey. Used in the Bible; bitch - a female canine, especially a female dog; bloody - If you have blood on you, you are bloody. Other meanings in UK; breasts - have you never eaten chicken breasts?; chink - a small crack or fissure. To stop up; cock - an adult male bird. Cock is the proper technical name for a male parrot.; cox - There are a lot of people with cox as their last name; dick - There are a lot of people who use this first or nickname i.e. Dick Nixon; faggot - a bundle of sticks or twigs used as fuel; fanny - the first name of some women; gaylord - the last name of some people; nazi - a member of Hitler's political party. Needed for history; pawn - many meanings including a chess piece; smut - many meanings including something such as soot that smudges; snatch - to seize or take away suddenly; Any filtering based on single words is doomed to failure and runs the danger of making one a laughing stock. Filtering that takes context into consideration is very difficult, found mostly in pay programs, and still is far from perfect. |

You can use that to start with. I recommend treating those as whole words rather than partial words though. -- The plural of datum is not "facts". A collection of facts is not "knowledge". |
