trouble running pear

Hi,

I've installed PHP 4.4 on my Mandrake 8 system. I want to install a
PDF library, but when I run the "pera install" command, I get a strange
error

[me@localhost bin]# ./pear install pdflib
Command '/usr/local/lib/php/pearcmd.php' is not valid, try 'pear help'

Does anyone know what this means and how to fix?
