Upgrading PHP

Ok, I've got a an apache server running Apache 2.0, PHP 4.2.2 and mysql
3.23.58 under redhat 9

I need to upgrade gd (phpinfo says its 1.6.2 or higher) to to gd2. Is it
possible to just upgrade gd without upgrading or recompiling php?
