Default JOB: Developer in Minnesota, USA. Higher Ed. / Open Source Project Management Experience

Carleton College is seeking a web application developer. We are
looking for a PHP/MySQL whiz who has the vision and chops needed to be
lead developer of major web applications.

Here are some interesting aspects to the job: it's part of a 5-member
interdisciplinary web team made up of *both* IT and Communications
folks, and the person in this position would be at the helm of the
development of a major content management system which may go
open-source.

Carleton is a small liberal arts college located in Northfield, MN, a
2-college town approximately 45 minutes south of Minneapolis and St.
Paul. I don't know the salary range; my guess is that experience will
be a major factor in salary level.

Here's the posting:

--------------------------------------------

Purpose of this Position:

The Web Application Developer will create web applications for Carleton
College, one of the nation's top private liberal arts colleges. As a
member of the Web Services Group, he/she will work to continuously
improve the accessibility, usability and communications effectiveness
of Carleton College web sites. The Web Application Developer will
report to the Director of Web Communications.

Responsibilities:

The Web Application Developer will:

* Take the lead role in maintaining, supporting, and improving the
College's PHP- and MySQL-based web content management system. In the
future this may include managing its release as an open-source
application.
* Serve as the lead developer and technical project manager on
assigned Web Services Group projects.
* Recommend and implement the most effective technical solution for
each assigned project. This may require custom application development,
new enhancements to the content management system, and/or evaluating
software products from commercial vendors and the open-source
community.
* Determine code standards and best practices in technical
documentation for the team.
* Investigate and troubleshoot web site technical problems.
* Train, manage, and mentor student workers assigned to the team as
Assistant Web Programmers.

Minimum Qualifications:

Required:

Fluency in XHTML, CSS, PHP (including OOP aspects), and SQL. Strong
communication skills and the ability to work well as part of a
collaborative team. Significant experience authoring database-driven
web applications. Ability to efficiently produce web tools that create
standards-compliant markup. Desire and aptitude to develop expertise in
a wide variety of new technologies.

Preferred:

Experience with open-source software development. Project management
experience. Some knowledge of Linux server administration. Proficiency
in additional web technologies (Macromedia Flash, streaming
audio/video, Javascript, DOM, etc.) is highly desirable.

If interested, please send a letter of interest providing information
as to where you learned about this position, résumé, and three
references complete with address, email, and phone numbers to Carleton
College, Human Resources, One North College Street, Northfield, MN
55057. Applications should be received by August 31, 2005 to ensure
consideration. Visit our web site at www.carleton.edu. Carleton College
is an equal opportunity employer committed to excellence through
diversity.
