Some problems with GD

I was using an outdated version of gd, and was trying to access
functions that this version of gd did not have; therefore, I downloaded,
compiled and installed a newer version, but PHP insists that I still
have the old version!
What's going on?!
Did I miss a step? Is there an installation procedure anywhere?
