How to connect mysql in Red Hat Linux enterprise edition 9

please help me
when i connect mysql (mysql -u root -p) then it gives a error it
is:---------
Error 2002: can't connect to local mysql server through socket' /var/
lib/mysql/mysql.sock'(2)

To start with, is MySQL even running?
