Wietse is probably the best qualified to comment on this. I'd be
surprised if he added features to postfix just because he was bored and
had a lot of free time. :)

Keep in mind that email software is communications software, and human
communications are very diverse. Compare this to something like climate
control software, where the parameter range is extremely narrow. You
could probably design a climate control system that can be used in any
dwelling in the world, easily predicting most scenarios.

The status quo proves that this isn't the case for email, however,
because the parameters for communication haven't been fully identified
and implemented in software. Until then, we'll continue to grapple with
features that were added for purely nontechnical reasons (aliases,
authentication/authorization, spam/virus detection, etc.) according to
the needs of our particular environments.
