Default fatal: no SASL authentication mechanisms

Hello,

I am trying to get SMTP AUTH to work in Postfix against the local
/etc/shadow file.

I have followed several different instructions on this matter, but Postfi=
x
always ends up in a state that it refuses all connections and prints the
following to the mail.err log file:

fatal: no SASL authentication mechanisms

The strange thing is:
the saslauthd program is running, and working against the shadow file. I
have verified this with the "testsaslauthd" tool.

I have been trying to get Postfix + SASL to work for awhile. I've been
following the numerous mailing list threads. I even went out and bought
Patrick Koetter's excellent book.

Unfortunately, I am still stuck. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
Ken Gallo
