Default confused about default configuration

I have just changed internet providers and cannot get
postfix to work.

I have a standalone computer. I am using a dsl
connection.

I am using the the postfix that came with Mandrake
9.0. I cannot tell
what version this is because I cannot find a command
to get the
version. (Sorry if I am overlooking something
obvious.) I know this
version is at least 2 years old.

I tried to build the newest version today, but I got
error messages.
So I though I'd try to get the old version working.

I am using the default main.cf file. I have not
changed a single thing
on it. This allows me to get mail, but I cannot send
mail. I am
confused, because according to the documentation, I
should not have to
change anything. But don't I need to at leat provide
some minimal
information about my provider?

If I type

mailq

I see

paul@localhost.localdomain

as the sender. This seems wrong to me.

Thanks

Paul
