A 'direct' session can easily get bounced across a firewall or 10 before it reaches your server. The Cisco PIX has a notorious 'security' measure called smtp fixup. It does all sorts of silly things to SMTP sessions. I wouldn't doubt that there are other firewalls that do that. I'm still trying to work out why a customer of ours gets \n.\n randomly in the middle of mail they send - the last culprit is the firewall, but they swear they don't have a proxy on it! |
