Default Apache 1.X - Not Logging In ErrorLog

I've noticed that all the apache 1.X (in this case, 1.3.33) servers we
run (under FreeBSD 4.11-REL and 5.4-REL) suffer from the same problem:

HTTP 408 errors (request timeout) do not appear in the ErrorLog.

These errors appear in the TransferLog, but not the ErrorLog. Is there
a simple way in apache to force these 408 errors into the ErrorLog?
