Default Help protect against HTTP Auth brute force attacks?

I have a lot of standard HTTP Auth logins. I'm concerned they can be brute
forced. Anyone know what I can do to stop this? I noticed theres no delays
when someone authenticates...

I'm using Apache 1.3.33, PHP 4.3.11, Linux 2.4.

Thanks.
