Default VirtualHosting: Do I need to restart Apache?

Folks,
When I create a new virtual host, I've tried to make it live with an Apache
restart - but this doesn't work - Is there a method other than Apache
stop/start?

Replies please... via the newsgroup, so everyone can learn...
Thanks,
Randell D.

You do need to restart. But if it's not working after that, then it's going
to be another issue.

Are you sure? I ask because I'm curious on how some ISPs provide a service
whereby they can enable hosting for a website at the click of a button.. I
used to use such an ISP in the UK that could do this...

FYI: I'm using Apache 1.3 latest...

Perhaps there is some confusion...

When I add/change my virtual hosts, they are not recognised if I do an
# apache restart

however, if I perform
# apache stop
# apache start

they are recognised/activated... But... If I do a stop/start, I'll loose
connections, true? I don't want this... So... If I am left with stop/start
as the only way to activate virtual hosts... then... How do some ISPs who
provide virtual hosting allow folk instant virtual hosting activation?

Cheers
