excel

i put some file excel and word in my web server
apache 1.3.x + php 4.x + mysql +frontpage 2000
When i try http://www.example.com/list.xls
the web seerver prompt for user and password but i don't set it in web
server.
Pressing ESC key or three ENTER key i view the file .
What the problem ?
I've viewed mine.types adn it contain
the line
Application/vnd.ms-excel xls
Application/vnd.ms-word doc rtf
