Default install antivirus on router/firewall ?

Hi,

I'm not an experienced linux user. I hope someone can explain me this
in a simple way.

I'm building a linux router for 5 windows workstations. I'm testing at
this moment FreeSco, IpCop and SmoothWall
Building the router with this easy software won't be a problem (I
hope).

But I would like to install an antivirus on the linux computer that
should scan anything that passes the router/firewall (http, ftp,
mail...)

Is their anything I can install on Freesco, IpCop or Smoothwall that
does this? If I can't get free software, I'm willing to buy software
that does this, but it should get updated automatically, etc.

Anyone any ideas or a better solution for the firewall/antivirus?

TIA

Danny

None of those solutions have a compiler built in so installing anything
other than binaries compiled correctly on another machine is not an
option. Even then can you be absoloutly sure beyond all doebt that any
mods you make to those systems will not compromise their security?

Use good AV on your file server and workstations and you will be OK.

The best thing would be to build a secure router/gateway without the AV, and
go though another box with the AV of your choice, or use it directly on the
clients.

There is also Astaro: http://www.astaro.com/ which have all that your are
looking for...All-in-One Firewall + VPN + Anti Virus + more which is free
for private users. Don't know about the AV etc. maybe you will have to pay
for that, not sure. Check it out, could very well be the best there is.

Another nice router dist., m0n0wall. Its a nice piece of software.
http://m0n0.ch/wall/ - but no AV as far as I know, it's very secure and
simple to work with. Runs from a CD/floppy or CF in a slot.

For the antivirus you can use ClamAV if you want free software quite
mature at this time or you can bet for any of the commercial ones. I
would advise for a commercial one. I am using Antivir from HBED+AV
and it works fine, but there are plenty of options with great
quality.
