No - they're protesting software patents by taking the site down for a day. See the site referenced on the main page for more information. I have recently looked to the United States and thought that the government must have lost their minds with the introduction of legislation such as the DMCA which seems to me to be one of the greatest threats to technological freedom, innovation, and progress (all to satisfy the media industry). THEN I started learning about what's going on in Europe -- the EU Copyright Directive, again along the lines of the halfbrained US DMCA, which uses law instead of technology to artificially push encryption and digital rights management. And now software patents? I used to be under the impression that Europe valued research more than the United States, but this is clearly not the case. When it's illegal to reverse engineer technologies let alone freely write software because it's covered under some big company's mass patent, technological innovation in Europe and the U.S. will SLOW TO A HALT. So then, who is going to tinker and innovate? Probably China and the other Asian countries you of European heritage have feared for so long! |

I hope they don't push it through. It'll be a complete desaster for any programmer trying to think freely. Sybren -- The problem with the world is stupidity. Not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself? |
