Orinoco Gold sporadically refuses to get configured

I am working with an ORINOCO 8410-WD card under Linux kernel
2.6.13 an am experiencing some problems when reconfiguring the
card. For example applying

iwconfig addr1 rate 11M

(provided that I have configured the card to something else, say 1Mbps,
before)
sets the data rate to 11Mbps but only sometimes, at least
"iwlist rate" tells me so. More often than not iwlist tells me
consistently that
the rate is still 1Mbps.

The same thing happens with the channel vonfiguration. Sometimes the
channel
gets reconfigured, sometimes it doesn't.

Is this a known problem ? Is there any fix for this ?
