Default ssh host login problem

Gents, especially Cameron Kerr (thanks for your previous response),

the problem with ssh on 2 fedora 1 machines appeared again.
I have a network, 'brasil', with two subnets,
192.168.1.0 and 192.168.2.0 connected through a
router/firewall 'fortaleza.brasil'.
The hosts are as in
[root@salvador root]# cat /etc/hosts:
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
192.168.2.1 fortaleza.brasil fortaleza
192.168.1.11 manaus.brasil manaus
192.168.2.11 salvador.brasil salvador

ssh-ing from manaus to fortaleza as user ario and root is possible,
from salvador to manaus ssh is only possible as root.

When I ssh -v manaus from salvdor as root I get:

[root@salvador root]# ssh -v manaus

[root@manaus root]#

So that's successful.

However, when I try the same as user 'ario', I get:

[ario@salvador ario]$

The previous time this problem occurred it was 'solved' (without knowing
what did it) by repeatedly restarting various services and rebootings.
Now however none of these works.
Does anybody have any clue??

thanks,
flip
