What is this "e-smith"? Never heard of it. Which major distro is it
based on?

If the kernel and PCMCIA services are reasonably up to date, it should
be easy. Start the PCMCIA service with a command like
/etc/init.d/pcmcia start . Plug the card in. If you hear 2 high beeps,
the card was recognized and you can do "dhcpcd eth0" or "ifconfig eth0
X.Y.Z.W up" for dynamic or static IP allocation. If you hear a high
beep and a low beep, the card wasn't recognized and the first thing you
should do is to update your kernel and PCMCIA services to the latest
available versions. There's a PCMCIA HOWTO at http://tlpd.org/ that you
should read.
