Default Dual booting from xp's NTFS partition using LILO?

Hello there!

Hope everything is going great in planet earth! I just wanted to
install slackware 9.1 as dual boot with winXP. I resized that ntfs
partition with ntfsresize
(mlf.linux.rulez.org/mlf/ezaz/ntfsresize.html), now istalling
slackware on second partition won't much problem, but I was wondering
where to put lilo? Should I put it on MBR or root partition of linux?
Should lilo be able to read from that first ntfs/hpfs xp partition?
Does XP uses the same boot loader of NT?

And what if I copy using .... "dd if=/dev/hda6 of=/bootsect.lnx bs=512
count=1" and copy bootsect.lnx to the root of the windows partition
and add c:\bootsect.lnx="Linux" to boot.ini? Will it overwrite the xp
bootloader? The worse part, I've got a dell inspiron which does not
have floppy. How do I use a usb mass storage device for copying that
file to ntfs partition, if I have to?

Good heavens! Too many queries .... I know, I know. Please give me
some hints, at least. After all, the newsgroups makes my day even here
in Congo!

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure about XP, but i had a similar situation with Win2k.
It was installed on the machine (but with FAT32 and nit NTFS)
and i wanted to add some Linux Distro.

So the way you already described worked fine for me:

- Install Linux in the dedicadted partition (/dev/hda6 in your case, right?)
- Install LILO in the boot sector of your root partition (again /dev/hda6),
leave the MBR alone.
- do that "dd....." which you already mentioned:-)
- copy the LILO bootsector to your Win root dir (e.g. C:\). Well, some
distros may be able to access NTFS directly, otherwise you will be stuck
with a floppy, UBS drive or you just mail the file from Linux
to your own addy and fetch the mail in Windows (or you use some trustable FTP
or any applicable web service ;-)
- Add the mentioned line to boot.ini. Remember to restore file attributes
after doing that.

Well, i hope it works for you, too.
I thought it would be a good idea to try not to mess with Windows
boot loader etc. for the first try, as Windows may not like this.
So if the above way works, why not.

Btw, i think as your problem is not related to networking in
Linux, you may consider to post such questions in some more
related news group......

Ciao

Ralf
