Default General wireless support under Linux

Hopefully this isn't too dumb a question, but rather than buy a wireless
(802.11b) device and then see whether I can get it working with Linux, I'd
rather find out what works first of all...

So, what wireless (USB / PCI) devices are easiest to get working under
Linux, in particular Debian and Knoppix?

Thanks
Pete
