3com AP2000 (3CRWE20096A) web-based setup

I got a 3com access point today, figuring since it claimed to be
configurable via a web-based interface I'd have no trouble setting the
thing up. I should know better by now.

I've connected the thing to a nic in my linux box, and assigned the nic to
192.168.0.1. The nic appears happy, but I can't find the damn AP. Looking
at the manual indicates that it should find its own IP from the dhcp
server running on my machine, set to assign IPs between 192.168.0.2 and
192.168.0.5. It isn't listening on any of those IPs. Failing that it's
supposed to set its IP to 169.254.xx.1 where xx is the decimal value of
the last byte of the access point's MAC address.

My questions are therefore why does it not want to know about my dhcp
server, which seems to be running fine, and how do I find out the MAC
address of a device I can't see on my network?

Does anyone have any experience with these things that could help me out?
