Simple name windows linux question

Dear Mr. Noone:

You have provided some informative posts
on the subject at hand. I do have a
windows network and I had no idea what
WINS is. Why would I need to know this
to string together some windows computers?

It seems like the only way to add a linux
box without messing around with the other
boxes is Samba. Otherwise the other boxes wont be able to resolve the name
of it. I assume when you ask me if
I have a DNS, you mean a Windows
DNS? Which I dont have and I dont think
I need.

Apparently if I add Samba somehow WINS
will be able to resolve the name for reasons
I dont understand.
