Default Wireless USB Adapter

Hello all,

I have looking for a Wireless USB Adapter compatible with Linux. I
have found the site http://atmelwlandriver.sourceforge.net, where
there is a list with several Wireless Adapters that work with Linux,
all using the Atmel chipset.

I think that DLink DWL-120 OR Linksys WUSB11 v2.6 may be a good
choice, but I need to confirm that they can be used with Linux. Do you
have any experience installing one of these devices?

Could you recommend me another Wireless USB Adapters Linux compatible,
maybe using other chipset (like PrismII)?

Thanks
David

It works very well with the Atmel WLAN driver. I've used it
extensively. Also try Belkin F5D6050, or Netgear MA101.

I haven't been able to get the USB Prism drivers working correctly.
The devices come up and seem to be working, but fail when associating
with a network. It's probably something stupid I've done wrong, but I
haven't had time to debug it. If you can get the Prism drivers
working, the WUSB12 is a very cute little adapter..

I have an SMC 2662W V.2 USB ethernet adapter working perfectly in linux.
Whichever device you pick I urge you to verify the revision or the
version of the device. Many newer revisions may not have ANY support in
linux.

Thanks Lewin
What of these two adapters have you used, DLink DWL-120, Linksys or
both? Do you know if Netgear MA101 is still available? In the Netgear
website it does not appear, only a new model called Netgear MA111.

I have used all of them. We sell a range of embedded Linux systems
based around an x86 PC. It has USB ports, and one of the things we
allow people to connect is an 802.11b pod. All of those devices are
equally simple to set up.

I'd concur that the Belkin one works pretty well with the possible
exception that it isn't always available on boot (about 1-in-30 attempts).
This could be an issue either with my PC, or with RedHat rather than the
adaptor, or the software.

I have the Netgear MA101 (A) and am trying to get it working with SuSE
8.2.

The machine is currently dual boot with Win98SE and the MA101 works
fine under Win98.

When I was going through the SuSE install today it got to the USB
devices / probe (?) (on an old Dell PII/300 box) and it seemed to
freeze. Removing the MA101 let it continue. (I'm pretty green with
Linux (although I've played with it on and off over many years ) but
not to PC hardware / Msoft / Novell etc)

In Yast2 it allows me to add an optional network device and gives
check boxes for wireless and usb etc. Would I load the atmel driver at
this point please? (I'm not sure if there is such a thing as a
'driver' .. when I start to look into it on the net I just get deeper
into the same hole with snapshots editing files and compling etc ..
;-( )

I'll drag a bit of cat5 over to the box and test it on that as well ..

Anyway, everything else seems ok .. ;-)

All the best ..
