Default mpeg-2 movie question

I have some movies in mpeg-2 files. They play fine using MPlayer on
Linux. If I write them to CD ROM they will play on my Apex DVD player
but the aspect ratio is wrong - they show tall and thin. Is there
something I need to do to the file before I write it to CD, or do I
need to adjust something on the DVD player? Or is it hopeless?

You might need to get mplayer to re-encode it to a different aspect ratio.
Look at the mplayer manpage, search for "aspect ratio" and the mencoder
options. I think you can force it to make a different ratio.
