Default Problem installing Knoppix 3.7 to HDD

Knoppix 3.7 works brilliantly from CD, but I want to install it to my
HDD and dual-boot with Windows XP (for the moment!). (MEPIS installs
first time, but has horrible problems seeing my Firewire external HDD,
while Knoppix sees them on boot!).
I've got a spare 10GB FAT32 partition on my HDD, but when I try to
install Knoppix using "sudo knoppix-installer" from a root console, I
get to the partitioning HDD bit, select hda and get this:
"opened disk read-only - you have no permission to write". How do I get
round this? NONE of the web pages I've read about installing Knoppix say
anything about this!

I suggest you boot to Knoppix in LiveCD mode and use QtParted (somewhere
obvious on the menu) to partition your disk as required, and then simply
install to the prepapred partitions.

When booting up Knoppix, use the "noswap" option. This
will prevent Knoppix from mounting the swap partition
(which presumably was created when you installed Mepis).

If any partition of a hard drive is mounted (like swap),
then your options for repartitioning are limited or
nonexistent.

Thanks - I'll try that.

Nope - used QPart, but when I went to install, it ONLY gave me the
option of either partitioning hda or sda or quitting - NOTHING else!
So unless there's another way of doing it, I'm stumped.

Cracked it! I found yet ANOTHER Howto on Newsforge which said to use the
root terminal from WITHIN Knoppix. Did that, and after a second attempt
at partitioning with QPart, the install went very smoothly, and I'm now
posting from Mozilla on Knoppix 3.7 installed on my HDD!

Thanks - I actually found yet ANOTHER "Howto" on Newsforge which
suggested I use the root terminal from WITHIN Knoppix, and not the root
console outside. I did that, and with two attempts at partitioning with
QPart, I'm up and running!

Thanks for the response anyway.
