Default mplayer crashes trying to play dvd

hi,

i've been getting crash consistently when i try to use MPlayer 1.0pre6
to play dvd on my acer travelmate 8005 laptop -- mplayer was built
using gcc 3.4.3 (no changes to autogenerated makefiles) and runs on
fedora 2 with a 2.6.11 kernel.

i've rebuilt the same version of mplayer on a different laptop using
the same gcc (although that was a suse box) and there were no problems
playing dvds.

can anyone tell me if they've come across something similar.
thanks
-r

for your info, the dvd drive is able to mount the dvd with no problem
and is reported on boot as:

hdc: MATSHITADVD-RAM UJ-831S, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
hdc: ATAPI 24X DVD-ROM DVD-R-RAM CD-R/RW drive, 2048kB Cache,
UDMA(33)

Different video cards / video drivers?

Turn on -vvv and see what is the problem.

I built an Mplayer on a FC2, AMD XP 2000, GF4200 system and moved it
to a PIII, onboard I810 video system, mplayer plays like nothing happened.
FC2 no problem either! Swapped hd on systems.
