mplayer fails to play some ASF streams

I am having trouble playing some (but not all) pre-recorded ASF stream
on mplayer 0.90 Some asf streams play and others don't with
mplayer.

Note I have all the latest win32codecs installed as
downloaded from the mplayerhq.hu site.

Note also that the same files that don't play under mplayer, have no
trouble playing under Xine and under Windoze Media Player.

I have read the mplayer docs and googled, but haven't found any clear
solutions. Couple of thoughts though:

1. The mplayer codec faq mentions something about codecs called wmav1
and wmav2 under the new/untested section. I could not find these on
the mplayer codec download site. Would these solve the problem? If
so, where can I find them?

2. Elsewhere, I saw mention of ffmpeg/libavcodec supporting WMA audio
codecs. I installed the ffmpeg from psyche.freshrpms, but it didn't
have any effect. Does the freshrpm version of mplayer support
ffmpeg? Is ffmpeg a solution here?

3. Some people mention something about there being different
versions/types of ASF with some being proprietary M$ format or
encrypted. However, if so, why is Xine able to play them?

Any other thoughts on what might be going on here?

Note: I am running mplayer-0.90-4.0.rh80.20030808.fr.rpm (from
psyche.freshrpms.net) under RH8.0/linux 2.4.20.
